MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE IN GOTHIC LITERATURE: THEORETICAL ASPECTS IN THE WORKS OF POE AND DOSTOEVSKY (541-544-bet)
Annotatsiya
This paper explores the role of mystery and suspense in Gothic literature by analyzing Edgar Allan Poe‘s short story The Tell-Tale Heart. The study investigates how Poe uses elements of psychological horror and suspense to illustrate the protagonist‘s internal conflict, focusing on the symbolic representation of guilt through the motif of sound. The main question this research addresses is how mystery and suspense are used to develop the theme of guilt in the narrative. By examining the protagonist‘s psychological breakdown, this paper reveals how Poe‘s mastery of suspense and symbolism deepens the horror and creates a chilling atmosphere. Furthermore, the study compares Poe‘s work with Fyodor Dostoevsky‘s Crime and Punishment to show how both authors address themes of guilt and madness, albeit through different narrative techniques and psychological depth. The findings highlight the significance of Gothic literature in shaping modern psychological fiction. This paper contributes to a broader understanding of how Gothic elements-particularly suspense and psychological tension-are used to explore human emotions and moral dilemmas.
